Description

The stone pagoda located at a temple site in Mulgeol-ri dates from the Unified Silla period. Judging from the large quantity of ancient Buddhist artifacts discovered at this site, the temple that once stood there must have been a large one. However, no information is currently available as to its name. The pagoda consists of three main levels and a two-tier base section. The sides of the base are carved, both at the upper and lower tiers, in such a way as to create pillar-like shapes along the two lateral edges as well as in the middle. The roof stone are separate from the body of the pagoda. The three stones making up the body of the pagoda have pillar-like beveled lateral edges on all four sides. The base of the roof stone is five-tiered at the first two levels and four-tiered at the third level. The roofs are shallow-pitched and thin and exhibit sharp hips with the four corners turned up equally sharply. The finial base is missing with only the dew basin remaining. Although in conformity with the Unified Silla style in its overall appearance, this pagoda has a number of elements departing from it; including the single pillar-like sections in the middle of the lateral sides of the base and the four-tiered base of the third-level roof that disrupts the harmony with the rest of the roof stones. The pagoda, therefore, appears to have been made at a slightly later time, possibly in the late 9th century.
