Description

Toedoseonsaeng pilbeop is a collection of models of calligraphy, written in 1556 (11th year of King Myeongjong’s reign) by Toegye Yi Hwang (1501-1570) for his student Gwon Ho-mun (pen-name: Songam, 1532-1587). The characters vary in size as well as in the type of script, ranging from regular to semicursive to grass script. The volume consists of twenty-one sheets excluding the cover page and is made up of thirteen books of regular script characters, fourteen books of semicursive characters, six pages of small-size regular script characters, four pages of small grass script characters and two lines of semicursive characters. Two sheets are missing after the semicursive characters, and after the missing sheets is a book of small-size regular script characters. Written on the final sheet is a nine-line Tang-dynasty poem. But, the handwriting on the final sheet does not appear to be Yi Hwang’s own. Toegyeseonsaeng yucheop is bound into two books and is a collection of letters sent from Yi Hwang to Gwon Ho-mun.
