Description
These documents have been passed from generation to generation in the family of Gwon Ju (pen-name: Hwasan, 1457-1505), a Joseon scholar who lived during Prince Yeonsan’s reign. Gwon Ju was admitted to government service during the reign of King Seongjong through the civil service examination. Fluent in Chinese, Gwon Ju accompanied state envoys to Liadong in the capacity of Jiljeonggwan (a temporary government post whose role is to address inquires to the Chinese court about Chinese characters or institutions). Later, he served successively as the Doseungji (Royal Secretary), Governor of Chungcheong-do and Dongjijungchubusa. In 1504 (10th year of King Yeonsangun’s reign), he became one of the victims of Gapja sahwa (‘Second Literati Purge’) and was put to death while on a forced exile in Pyeonghae. He was later rehabilitated following the deposing of Yeonsangun and was posthumously given the title “Uchamjan” by King Jungjong. The two documents, ‘Hanseongbuhwanghwabangsojaega daemaemaemunseo’ and ‘Jaesanyangdo munseo,’ are both highly valuable for understanding the economy and family life in early Joseon.
