Description
The Buddhist painting of Yeongsusa Temple represents the scene of Sakyamuni Buddha’s sermon at the Vulture Peak from the Saddharmapundarika Sutra (The Lotus Sutra), with the focus placed on the assembly of listeners. This hanging painting was painted in 1653, by Myeongok and three other monk painters. The painting, considered the most grand and majestic rendition of the scene of the Vulture Peak Assembly of all late Joseon Buddhist paintings on the same theme, also stands out from others for its highly realistic and lifelike portrayal of figures. Sariputta, seated in front of Buddha’s throne, showing his back and dozens of attendants standing on either side of Buddha are depicted in great detail. The colors are vivid, and the brushwork assured and spirited. The appearances of the many figures are highly varied as well. The Buddhist painting of Yeongsusa Temple, one of the oldest extant Buddhist paintings of this type, is also highly significant as the earliest example of the scene of the Vulture Peak Assembly in which Sariputta appears among the disciples. Although some parts were retouched in subsequent eras, this painting is an outstanding example of a 17th-century Joseon Buddhist painting on the theme of Vulture Peak Assembly, very telling about the stylistic leanings of this period.
