Description
This is the royal certificate issued to Admiral Yi Sun-sin (1545-1598) for his brilliant contribution to repelling the enemy during the Japanese Invasions in 1592. The certificate was posthumously presented in 1604 (the 37th year of King Seonjo’s reign). Commended at this time were eighteen generals: three in the first grade, including Yi Sun-sin, Gwon Yul, and Won Gyun; five in the second grade, including Sin Jeom, Gwon Eung-su, Kim Si-min, Yi Jeong-am, and Yi Eok-gi; and ten in the third grade, including Jeong Gi-won, Gwon Hyeop, Yu Sa-won, Go Eon-baek, Yi Gwang-ak, Jo Gyeong, Gwon Jun, another man named Yi Sun-sin, Gi Hyo-geun, and Yi Un-ryong. The certificate consists of 77 lines praising Admiral Yi for his distinguished wartime service and stating that Yi, his parents and his wife and children would be promoted three ranks, and also be awarded 13 servants, 150 gyeol of land, 10 ryang of silver money, one dan of fabric for clothing, and a horse raised at the royal stable. The rear side bears in small script the name of Yi Gyeong-ryang, the official who wrote the certificate. A detailed record of the admiral’s heroic activities in sea battles during the seven-year war and awards conferred on him, the certificate has great value as a reference for study of war history as well as bibliographical research.
