Description
This elegant celadon dish has a curved body that flares outward at the rim and a tall broad base. The exterior surface is embellished with a band of overlapping lotus petals producing a geometric effect. The dish is covered overall with a pale green glaze with pure luster. It is assumed to have been made around the 12th century at a kiln in Sadang-ri, Gangjin. Three silica spur marks are found on the base, a typical feature of celadon vessels decorated with pure glaze without cracks. In view of the graceful, naturally curved vessel form, the excellent carving skill and the clear glaze, the dish is judged to be a top-class product. In particular, the harmony of the delicate carvings and varying densities of the glaze attest to the refined artistic expression of Goryeo celadon ware.
