Description

When viewed from the front, this local Confucian school has its main shrine, Daeseongjeon (meaning “Hall of Great Accomplishment”), at right, and the lecture hall, Myeongnyundang (meaning “Hall of Edification”), at left. Daeseongjeon Shrine has multi-bracket sets in a rare style for a Confucian shrine other than Munmyo Confucian Shrine in Seoul and Daeseongjeon Shrine of Iksanhyanggyo Local Confucian School. But the lecture hall has no ceiling, which usually accompanies a roof structure with multi-bracket sets, in an apparent effort to emphasize the Confucian value of simplicity. The lecture hall has an open wood-floored hall at the center, which is flanked by heated-floored rooms, a typical floor arrangement of the main school buildings of the Joseon Dynasty. The roof is gabled and the rooms have attics used for storage. The side wall of the left room has traces of a door frame. The main shrine, built in the early 17th century, maintains its original appearance. In view of its floor arrangement and techniques used for making the doors and windows, the lecture hall also has significant historic, artistic and academic value.
