Description

A stupa is a structure containing Buddhist relics, namely the cremated ashes of a monk (sarira). This stupa, currently inside the precincts of Donghwasa Temple, was found lying in a crane habitat in Donghak-dong before it was moved there. Both the body of the stupa and its base are octagonal in shape. The base is made up of three tiers, with the bottom and middle tiers carved out of a single stone block. The top tier of the base is surrounded by large lotus petals that are simple and a bit rudimentary. Pillar-shaped details are added at each corner edge of the body of the stupa. The broad roof is shallow-pitched and slopes gently toward the eaves. The stupa is surmounted by an attractive two-tier finial. The finish of the elements and the overall style suggest that this stupa was made sometime in early Goryeo.
