Description
The Shurangama Sutra, also known as the Sutra of the Heroic One, was translated into Chinese by Sramana Paramiti, a monk from central India, in 705 during the Tang Dynasty and annotated by Jie Huan during the Song Dynasty. This 15th century woodblock print edition consists of 10 volumes bound in two books. It begins with two frontispieces drawn under the title and ends without a postscript or invocation. Neatly printed from beautiful blocks carved based on calligraphy by Seong Dal-saeng (1376-1444), the text contains Korean endings rendered in small simplified strokes of Chinese characters. At the center of each two-page spread, or of each printing block, are found an abbreviated title of this sutra and characters for book numbers and pagination. The sutra is highly evaluated as material for linguistic and bibliographic studies.
