Description

Yeongcheon Confucian Academy was part of a national educational organization in which students could both pursue knowledge and hold a ceremony to pray for the repose of their ancestors. The mortuary tablets of many sages, including that of Confucius were housed in the sacred shrine, its main building. It was first built in 1435, the 17th year the reign of King Sejong the Great of the Joseon Dynasty and was repaired by the governor Kim Heumjo in 1513, the eighth year of King Jungjong’s reign. It was repaired or rebuilt several times after that. It is composed of five front spaces and three side spaces and it has a ridge-shaped roof. A pair of doors is installed in the middle space between the two ends and its top is decorated with a lattice that has the pattern of hashtag (#).There are three altars inside the building, one at the back of the middle partition and other two are at either end. The style of its roof is called yeondeung, with exposed rafters. It is regarded as a unique cultural asset because a Chinese carpenter rebuilt it in a Chinese style in 1453.
