Description
This tortoise-knobbed gold seal bearing the inscription of four Chinese characters, Yu-Seo-Ji-Bo (literally meaning ""Seal of the Imperial Edict""), is one of the eleven royal seals of Joseon (1392-1910) that were remolded or mended in 1876, as illustrated in Boinso uigwe (The Protocols on the Royal Seals). Details of the seal, which was generally used to sign letters of appointment for provincial governors, are also contained in the book, including the date of its production, historical background, dimensions, and materials. The seal is considered worthy of inscription on the national cultural heritage list in view of its historical value as an administrative tool used by Joseon rulers, its artistic value as a representative item of Korea's royal handicraft heritage, and a good example of successful art repatriation.
