Description

The tripod pot was used to heat or boil alcohol, food, and medicine. It is usually found in large tombs such as royal tombs. It was found in Cheonmachong Tomb, or the Heavenly Horse Tumulus, in Hwangnam-dong, Gyeongju. It is 20.5 cm in height, its diameter is 18 cm, and the handle is 13 cm long. The pot has a flat globular shape with a lid. The three legs are shaped after animals. A horizontal line runs around the pot and above this line is the spout, which looks like the curved horns on a ram's head. The handle is at a right angle to the spout. It is edged, hollow, and has a nail hole at the end, which means that an additional wooden handle could have been used when necessary. On the lid there is a cap in the shape of a flower bud. The lid is hinged onto the main body above the handle. The size of the pot, the length of the legs, and the handle are proportionate and the spout in the form of a ram's head is realistic. The pot commands attention because it shows a connection with the Six Dynasties era in China.
