Description
This cursive script calligraphy of the poem (written in lines of five characters) composed by Yi Gun-ok (Tang Dynasty of China) was written by Hwang Gi-ro (pen-name: Gosan, 1525~1575?), a master calligrapher of 16th-century Korea. Hwang, who built his house, called Maehakjeong Pavilion, on the bank of the Nakdonggang River and remained there for the duration of his private life, embraced the cursive writing style of the Chinese monk Huai Su (懷素) and the unique writing style of Zhang Bi (張弼, pen-name: 東海翁, 1425~1487, Ming Dynasty China), with the result that his writing style tends to be energetic and flexible. This calligraphy was collected by Yi Jang-hee, a descendant of Yi Woo, himself a son-in-law of Hwang Gi-ro, and was donated by Yi Jang-hee’s eldest son. Although some words are missing from the end part, it is considered one of Hwang Gi-ro’s representative calligraphic works on wide fabric.
