Description
This seven-word poem was written in the hand of King Hyojong (1619-1659). The poem written in semi-cursive script, on paper is mounted to a scroll. On the yellow silk cloth with a rhomboid pattern above the king’s calligraphy, there is a heading that reads “Hyomyo eopil jinjeok (Veritable Handwriting of King Hyojong).” Among surviving handwriting samples of King Hyojong are letters and other writing samples including Hyojong Daewang eopilcheop (Collected Calligraphies of King Hyojong, Kept at Gyujanggak Archives of the Academy of Korean Studies), as well as several smaller samples and a wood block reproduction (Relics Related to Princess Myeongan, Treasure No. 1220). This poem is the largest writing sample of King Hyojong, in ink on paper. It is considered the best surviving handwriting of the Joseon monarch also in that the brushstrokes are very assured, and some of the characters are in semi-cursive script.
