This calligraphic work is a draft version of the manuscript for the epitaph of Soryeongmyo, the tomb of Sukbin Lady Choe, written in July 1744 (the 20th year of the reign of King Yeongjo) when the king was 51. This draft version is missing information about the names of his mother’s ancestors, the date of the posthumous conferment of honors, and the date of Sukbin’s entry to the palace. However, these records were all written for the epitaph of Soryeongmyo at Soryeongwon at present. In addition, there are some differences between the draft and the final versions of the epitaph regarding who wrote which part, etc. This manuscript of the epitaph exhibits King Yeongjo’s unique style of writing, which itself displays his unique personality. Along with the Manuscript of Prayer Text for Sukbin Lady Choe’s Family Memorial Rite (Treasure No. 16310100), this manuscript of the epitaph is considered a significant piece of calligraphy among his extant works.
