Description
This calligraphic scroll contains a farewell poem presented to Jeong Min-si (pen-name: Jeongwa, 1745~1800) upon his departure for a new post in Honam. It was composed by King Jeongjo (1752~1800) in lines of seven characters in February 1791. The piece is written in dark pink silk decorated with various splendid gold and silver gilt designs including peonies, bats, and clouds. The beginning of the scroll bears an oval-shaped seal engraved in relief with the inscription of a line from The Book of Odes; while the end of the scroll contains a square-shaped seal engraved with the words Hongjae (pen-name of King Jeongjo) and Mangijiga (meaning that although the king was busy with dealing with many works, he had found time to read books). The calligraphic scroll, decorated in a Japanese style, was donated by Korean-Japanese businessman Kim Yong-du, from Sacheon, Gyeongnam Province, to Jinju National Museum. The cover of the scroll’s wooden case made of paulownia wood, bears the title, Calligraphy of King Jeongjo, which was written by Kim Don-hui (pen-name: Seongdang, 1871~1936), a representative calligrapher during the period of Japanese colonial rule of Korea, in June 1930. The inside of the cover contains two epilogues, one by a pro-Japanese collaborator Jeong Byeong-jo (1863~1945) written in 1930, the other by a Japanese monk named Tokutomi Soho (德富蘇峰, 1863~1957) written in 1940. Along with the Calligraphy by King Jeongjo – Jemunsangjeongsa (Treasure No. 16320200), this calligraphic work for Jeong Min-si was written when the king was 40 and his calligraphy skills were at their peak.
