Description

This calligraphy consists of a note for the scholars of Gukje composed by King Jeongjo on September 9, 1798, after he had set them a difficult question which they were unable to answer or even fully understand. This story can be found in Seungjeongwon ilgi (Diaries of the Royal Secretariat), Jeongjo sillok (Annals of King Jeongjo), and Hongjaejeonseo (collection of King Jeongjo). The calligraphy was written as a draft on three pieces of pasted Dak paper bearing the contents of the note, which was intended for scholars with raw talent whom the king felt were a disgrace to himself. This very rare example of a note written by King Joengjo to the Confucian scholars of the Seonggyungwan, which exhibits the energetic style of the king’s writing, is kept as the teachings of King Jeongjo and preserved at Bongmodang Shrine. As this calligraphic work shows the atmosphere of the event (Gukje) and demonstrates the conviction of King Jeongjo, it is considered a highly valuable historic material.
