Description

This painting, created in 1731 by Doik and three other monk painters, hangs in a worship hall of Sudasa Temple, behind a Sakyamuni Buddha statue. The painting represents Sakyamuni Buddha surrounded by the Eight Bodhisattvas, Brahma, Indra, the Ten Disciples, Four Guardian Kings, several of the Eight Vajras and the Present Buddha of Other Worlds, all standing in a pose of veneration. The members of the retinue in the foreground are portrayed larger in size than those in the background, thereby making the main Buddha the focal point. The faces of the main Buddha and his attendant Bodhisattvas appear good-natured and charitable, and the color tone, having green and red as the two dominant colors, is calm, while the dresses worn by Buddha and his retinue are densely covered with design motifs and sumptuous. These aspects, along with the well-proportioned bodies and elegant and meticulous brushwork, are typical characteristics of early 18th-century Joseon Buddhist paintings, beautifully embodied in the painting of Sudasa Temple.
