Description

This portrait of State Preceptor Jinul, a much-venerated monk of Goryeo, represents him dressed in a white robe and outer vestment, seated on a high chair with his body turned toward the right and a staff in one hand. This portrait, painted based on the same existing portrait as his portrait housed in Guksajeon Hall of Songgwangsa Temple (1780), appears to pre-date the latter, judging from the detailed way the old monk is depicted in fine brushwork, and the very light colors used for his clothes. Meanwhile, this portrait is in many respects strikingly similar to the Portrait of Buddhist Monk Yujeong in Donghwasa Temple, Daegu (Treasure No. 1505), including the style of depiction of small details and brushwork, suggesting that it may have been painted at around the same period of time as the latter. If this is true, this portrait of Donghwasa Temple, excellent in the quality of painting, is the oldest extant portrait of State Preceptor Jinul.
