Description

This is a small (11.1 cm tall) gilt-bronze Buddha statue exhibited in Ho-Am Art Museum in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do. It has a mountain-like crown, samsangwan (crown with three peaks). The hair hangs down in two strands and covers the shoulders. The head is a little bit bent, and the face, which wears a smile, is large compared to the body. The neck is not clearly described that it gives a slightly rough feeling. The upper body does not wear a robe, but the skirt comes up near the chest. Its hem is folded into pleats and spread wide to below the pedestal. Pleats are also shown on the front and rear of the statue. As with the usual style of a seated Buddha with one leg across the other, the right leg is folded over the left and the right elbow is placed on right knee with the right hand lightly touching the cheek. The wrists have thick bracelets on them. Under the left foot, which is hanging down, there is a footrest with a carved lotus flower pattern. Though the carving skill is not outstanding, the statue maintains the traditional style of a half-seated Buddha. The large face with a small body and the thick waist and upper body are reminiscent of the style of the states of Je and Ju in China, and it is believed to date from the end of 6th century. In particular, considering the fact that it was excavated in Gyeongsangnam-do, there is a great probability of it being a work from Silla.
