The extant examples of painting son the theme of Thousand Buddhas are extremely rare. The value of this Painting of Thousand Buddhas in Yongmunsa Temple created in 1709, by four monk painters including Domun, Seoljam, Gyesun, and Haeyeong is, therefore, quite inestimable. Dating from the same year as the painting of the eight great events from the life of Sakyamuni Buddha, this painting is accompanied by complete information on the circumstances of its creation, including the name of the patron who funded it. In the orderly arrangement of Buddhas and well-defined shapes and lines, this work is a great example of early 18th-century Joseon Buddhist paintings, highly informative of the stylistic trends in this period. Aside this work, only another painting of Thousand Buddhas has survived. The latter, dating from 1754, has some of its panels housed in Seonunsa Temple with the rest in the collection of the Dongguk University Museum. While the Thousand Buddha painting of Seonunsa Temple is made up of five panels, this one is in a single large sheet, and predates the former by about a half century. This painting is also of significance as a rare relic of the Thousand Buddha cult in late Joseon.
