Description
Maha parinirvana Sutra (The Nirvana Sutra) was printed with the first edition of the Tripitaka Koreana, carved in the 11th century, and its existence was discovered only recently. The title of this sutra in the Haeinsa Temple set of the Tripitaka Koreana, carved at a later time, is Mahakasyapa Nirvana Sutra. A single volume sutra, made up of only three sheets, this sutra, as it shows differences from its later version in the second Tripitaka Koreana edition, in terms of in characters used, is deemed important for the comparative study of the two versions of the Tripitaka Koreana. The examples of Buddhist texts printed with the first Tripitaka Koreana edition that had been stored inside a Buddha statue are rather rare. This sutra is also significant in that it was discovered during a comprehensive examination of all Buddhist treasures held in temples of the Jogye Order. The quality of carving is outstanding, and the paper, of high quality, is glossy and is in an excellent condition. Nearly intact after centuries, this sutra bears testimony to the advanced printing technology of Goryeo.
