Description

This is one of the two stone monuments erected at Yeonhwasa Temple and was discovered in 1961. It was originally located at the nearby site of Saengcheonsa Temple. A Buddha statue is carved on all four sides and another stone was made into a pedestal. The front has five images in which Amitabha Buddha is the principal Buddha with statues of Arhat and Bodhisattva placed to the left and right. The head of the principal Buddha has the mandorla with a carved lotus flower and bead decoration, with small images of Buddha to the left and right. The pedestal where the principal Buddha sits is impressed with lotus leaves and stems rising from a pond. The rear side has depicted the image of a pensive Buddha with one leg across the other. It has the structure of a triad where the two Bodhisattvas kneel down to the left and right with the right hand on the right cheek and the left hand on the right ankle. The left and right Bodhisattva statues adopt the pose of praying for the principal Buddha image, kneeling down with an incense burner in their hand. Looking over the left and right sides, the upper side has the statue of Buddha, and a 卍 pattern is made like a handrail on which the inscription is carved. The inscription appears to have been made in 678, the 18th year of King Munmu’s reign, when Baekje had already fallen, and the stele is believed to have been built at that time.
