Description
The Rain Gauge Pedestal of Tongyeong is currently kept at the National Science Museum, and it was set up in Tongyeong, sometime during the 19th century, when the town was home to a naval base. In the center of the façade of the rain gauge, next to the inscription “cheugudae (rain gauge pedestal),” there is a date inscription that reads: “the second lunar month of sinmi year.” Here, ‘sinmi,’ the year of the rain gauge’s creation, can refer either to 1811 (the 11th year of King Sunjo’s reign) or to 1871 (the 8th year of King Gojong’s reign). These inscriptions, especially, the date inscription, add further value to this scientific artifact of high historical significance. The rain gauge, shaped like a square column, is mounted on a round pedestal which, although cracked in places, retains its original appearance. This is one of the only five rain gauges surviving from historical times and the sole example complete with the original stand.
