Description
The Embroidered Folding Screen of the Four Seasons, a folding screen from the Goryeo Dynasty, is different from those of the Joseon Dynasty. This folding screen has four folds while the ones from Joseon have eight to twelve folds. There is a tree and a flowerpot with grape patterns embroidered on plain silk on one fold and a vase and a flowerpot with lotus flower on the second. On the other two folds are a dwarf apricot tree and a vase with a painting of a pair of butterflies. The Buddhist symbol embroidered on that fold suggests that the country was then under the influence of Buddhism. Many embroidered patterns were made using the jaryeonsu technique. The flowerpots and grape leaves are embroidered with seonsu (the line technique), making outlines distinctive through a clear contrast with their surroundings. Meanwhile, pine tree leaves are embroidered with soripsu (the pine-leaf technique). Compared with the screen folds from the Sung Dynasty of China, this embroidery has a distinctive Korean flavor. In particular, the frequent use of kkonsasu (the twisting technique) is a distinctive feature of Korean embroidery. In addition, the colors give a harmonious impression.
