Science books surviving from the early Joseon Period are extremely rare. Sinpyeon sanhak gyemong (Introduction to Arithmetic) is a mathematical study book imported from Yuan China, used as the textbook for those preparing for a technical career. Other examples of mathematical primers, published for such purpose during this period, include Yanghwi sanbeop (Arithmetic Book Compiled by Yang Hui) and Sangmyeong sanbeop (Calculation Methods Explained in Detail). This book was printed with the gyeongo Type, a type cast in the early 15th century, based on the handwriting of Prince Anpyeong. Complete, with no missing volumes or pages, this ancient book is of inestimable value. Meanwhile, the postscript at the end of the book, providing information on the cast of types, including the gyeongja and gabin types, is also of great significance for the understanding of movable type technology in early Joseon. One of the exceedingly few books printed with the gyeongo Type that have been preserved intact, this book holds immeasurable value for research into the history of early Joseon science and publishing and bibliographic research into this period, as well as for the understanding of historical movable metal type technology.
