Description
It is unknown when Cheongnyongsa Temple was founded and how big it was at the time. The only things remaining at the original site are a Stone Lantern, the Sarira Pagoda of Goryeo's National Preceptor Bogakguksa and a monument to him. Cheongnyongsa is currently located at the northern part of the original site. This stone lantern was to bless Monk Bogakguksa's memory, and it lies next to the sarira pagoda built for the monk. It was built in the early Joseon Dynasty although it reflects the rectangular style of Goryeo. Generally the light chamber of a stone lantern is placed at the center on the three-tiered pedestal, and the roof stone is right under the finial. The bottom layer of the pedestal is engraved with a lion in a prone position, from which the lantern is named Lion Stone Lantern. The four edges of the quadrilateral light chamber are sculpted into round pillars and windows are installed at the front and the back. The roof stone shows the characteristics of Goryeo as it has the stiff slopes with floral carvings on the corners, and has a little flower embossed on the eaves. Placing the lantern next to the sarira pagoda and the monument is typical of the arrangement style in Joseon. Based on a record at the monument, it is assumed that the construction of the lantern started in the first year of King Taejo’s reign (1493) and was completed the following year.
