Description

The blue and white celadon porcelains produced in the earlier days under the influence of porcelains from the Won and Ming Dynasties of China resembled Chinese shape and design. Later, however, distinctive Korean features were developed. The porcelain on exhibition is a white celadon with engravings of plum and bamboo trees. It stands 33.2 cm high with an upper diameter of 8.4 cm and a lower diameter of 9.9 cm, and was used as a wine bottle. The mouth is rolled outward, and the contour line that expands as it passes the short, thin neck area is exquisite and full of energy. The heel is made rather tall, making the bottle beautifully balanced. The skillful design of plum and bamboo trees facing each other suggests that it may have been painted by a court artist. The bamboo shoots are growing tall under the treeㄴ and a pair of birds is sitting on a branch of a fully blossomed plum tree. The transparent milky white enamel is evenly melted to give a clear polish and clean feeling. This bottle was found in November 1967 while the Tomb of Yi Hae was being moved from Gwacheon-myeon, Siheung-si, Gyeonggi-do. It is considered one of the best pieces from the earlier days of the Joseon Dynasty.
