Description
This is one of the books making up a late-Goryeo hand-transcribed Avatamsaka Sutra (The Flower Garland Sutra), written in silver on oak paper, dating from the mid-14th century. The book corresponds to the Volume 4 of the total eighty volumes making up this sutra. Although there is no illustration at the beginning, the cover page is adorned with a lotus design. The text is written with great care, in regular script, and the state of preservation is excellent. Some ten such hand-copied sutras, written in silver on oak paper, have survived to the present. Two of them, both segments of the Avatamsaka Sutra, were designated as cultural heritage objects and are held in Girimsa Temple and the National Museum of Korea, respectively. This hand-copied Avatamsaka Sutra was, therefore, also deemed to deserve protection under the designation as a cultural heritage object.
