Description
These are the relics which were handed down by Jeong Giryong (Pen name Maeheon, 1562∼1622), who was an army general at the time of of the Japanese invasion in 1592. He was a military vassal of the middle of Joseon Dynasty, changing his name to Giryong by order of the King after he passed the military service examination in 1586. As a middle-ranking officer, he repelled about 500 enemy Japanese soldiers in the Battle of Geochang. Later he became commander of Gonyangsanseong Fortress, and prevented the Japanese army from advancing into the Jeolla-do area. When the Japanese re-invaded in 1597, he took command of a punitive force and utterly defeated the enemy in the Battle Goryeong, even taking prisoner the enemy commander. After his death, he was enshrined in a hall for his unswerving loyalty, and given the posthumous name Chungui. The articles appointed as National Treasures are a belt with jade decoration, a mortuary tablet, a will, writs, a royal decree and other documents. Besides these, 58 printed woodblocks recording his lifetime achievements and nine writs of appointment given to his family were designated cultural assets. 84 articles owned by his descendant, Jeong Gimok are kept in Chunguisa Temple.
