Description

This album contains calligraphies by Jo Mun-su (1590-1647), an illustrious literati calligrapher of the early 17th century, offering a taste of his celebrated writing style, said to be a blend of the styles of Wang Xizhi and Zhao Mengfu. The album begins with Beomssi simjam (Fanshi xinzhen in Chinese, Counsel of Sir Fan) by the Song-Dynasty scholar Fan Jun, neatly written in regular script, which is followed by Aegangdu (Aijiangtou in Chinese, Lamenting by the River) by the Tang poet Du Fu, in his signature semi-cursive style. The album ends with three seven-word regulated verse by Du Fu, also written in semi-cursive script, but in slightly smaller characters. The phrase at the very end of the album informs that these calligraphies were made in the tenth lunar month in 1647, when Jo Mun-su was fifty-eight years of age, in other words, shortly before his death, for a certain Sim. Extant writing samples of Jo Mun-su are limited to a handful of letters. This album is, therefore, unique in that it contains calligraphies displaying his genius to the fullest. The dated album is in an excellent state of preservation as well.
