Description
These relics of Gwak Jae-u are kept in Chungiksa Shrine in Uiryeong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do. When Japan invaded Korea in 1592, he raised a civil troop to fight against the invaders. He usually attacked the enemy by ambush or by using guerrilla tactics. He also contributed to Kim Simin's victory at Jinjusanseong Fortress by sending his troops. The relics include swords and a harness which he used during the war, an ink stone with a grape design which he used, a sajacheorin (a small seal made of iron), and a white porcelain octagonal bowl with a flower and plant design. The sword is 86 cm long and 3 cm wide, and its hilt is 16 cm long. It is paired with its scabbard, and they are both well preserved. The hilt is made of wood with a leather strip coiled around it. The back of the sword is slightly curved upward and the upper parts of the hilt are extremely worn. The harness is much eroded and was repaired in August 1973. The ink stone and the ink container are made of obsidian. They are said to have been given to him by the emperor when he went to Ming Dynasty China with his father. The sajacheorin has a lion statue carved on the upper part. The porcelain bowl is a small octagonal plate, 6.5cm tall. Its upper diameter is 21.5 cm and the lower one is 12.5 cm. The strips of the hat are made of bamboo and amber.
