Description

This album of calligraphic works by Song Jun-gil (1606-1672) contains Hakgojaemyeong, which was written by the Southern Song philosopher Zhu Xi, and Ugokjabyeong isipjeol (Twenty Verses on Miscellaneous Themes), written by his father-in-law, Jeong Gyeong-se. Hakgojaemyeong, written in even-sized characters, in semi-cursive script, shows the influence of Yi Hwang’s (pen-name: Toegye) calligraphic style, whereas Ugokjabyeong isipjeol displays Song Jun-gil’s own semi-cursive signature style. Song as led to embrace the philosophy and calligraphic style of Yi Hwang by Jeong Gyeong-se, a scholar of the Yeongnam academic group, while being the heir to the legacy of the Giho School of Confucianism (Kim Jang-saeng and Kim Jip), as part of a lineage headed by Yi I (pen-name: Yulgok). This large, well-preserved album is considered Song Jun-gil’s representative calligraphic work.
