Description
This three-volume calligraphy album contains writings by Park Se-dang (1629-1703, pen-name: Seogye), a prominent scholar-official of 17th-century Joseon. Calligraphic works in this album were written for his disciple Yi Jeong-sin (1660-1727). The first volume contains poems Park Se-dang composed based on the rhymes of poems by Yi Jeong-sin, along with Chinese poems on such themes as love of nature and disdain for the sordid realities of the world. The second and third volumes are made up of letters written by Park Se-dang, each containing twenty-nine and twenty-five letters. Most of them were addressed to Yi Jeong-sin, except one sent to his son-in-law Nam Gu-man and six sent to Park Tae-bo. These letters appear to have been written between 1679 and 1702, and most of them are not included in Seogyejip (Collected Works of Park Se-dang). Two of these letters are particularly noteworthy: the one in which Park Se-dang asks Yi Jeong-sin to critique a Chinese painting album, and the other in which he talks about matters related to the portrait of his that was being painted by Park Tae-bo around that time. The first volume offers intimate glimpses into the temperament of this man enamored with nature and affords a taste of his calligraphy style. Meanwhile, the letters in the second and third volume are revealing of the close ties that existed between Park Se-dang and his protege Yi Jeong-sin, at the same time as providing interesting anecdotal information about viewing and critiquing paintings and the making of his portrait.
