Description
This calligraphic work titled Wongyobeopcheop was written byYi Gwang-sa (1705-1777, pen-name: Wongyo), an illustrious calligrapher of the 18th century during the Joseon Dynasty. Although its production date and recipient are unknown, it is thought to have been produced during Yi’s middle-age years, as it bears the imprints of many seals including those of Wongyoeunja, Yi Gwangsa, Yi Gwangsa Pilseo (calligraphy by Yi Gwang-sa), Yi Gwangsa-in (seal of Yi Gwang-sa), and Wongyo. Written in semi-cursive and cursive writing style, it consists of 40 pages, the first 25 of which are written in black ink on bright pale jade green silk; pages 26~34, in black ink on very light jade green silk; and the last 6 pages, in gold on black silk. The parts written in seal script (an ancient style of Chinese calligraphy) contain annotations written in red ink. Preserved in good condition, this calligraphic work exhibits the typical style of Yi Gwang-sa’s other extant works
