Description
This seated Buddha was excavated near Heukseoksa Temple and kept here thereafter. The pedestal where the statue of Buddha sits and the mandorla formalizing the brilliance from the whole body are put aside separately. The face is suitably fleshy and wears a soft smile. The body seems to be stable, but the shoulders are a little shrunken and the width gets narrower at the knees, which are characteristics of late Silla. The robe over the shoulders falls into natural pleats that fall down in front of the legs in a fan shape. The pedestal is octagonal and the middle and bottom pedestals, but no top pedestal, are remaining. Lotus patterns are engraved on the bottom pedestal. Lotus and cloud patterns enhance the head and body brilliance on the mandorla, and a flame pattern is carved prominently on the edge. Particularly in view of the decorative pedestal and the mandorla, this is a precious seated Buddha typical of the tradition of such statues in the 9th century.
