Description
This album titled Giwoncheop is a calligraphy album containing seven-word, five-word and four-word poems written in seal script, by Yu Han-ji (1760-1834, pen-name: Giwon), a notable early 19th-century calligrapher, particularly renowned for his seal script. These outstanding brushworks exhibit influences from various sources, including well-known seal script steles of the Eastern Han, suggesting that Yu Han-ji was broadly acquainted with Chinese calligraphy. The album also contains a seal script text written in the style of an ancient text. Although these brushworks are undated, the level of maturity exhibited by them suggests that they are from his later years. This album showcasing the various styles of Yu Han-ji who appears to have studied most major Chinese seal script calligraphic traditions, including the inscription on the Liqui stele, contains undoubtedly the best of all writing samples of his.
