Description

Buljo samgyeong (The Three Sutras) is a collection of three books compiled by an eminent Yuan monk Mengshan Deyi. The three works include the Sutra of Forty-two Chapters, which contains the earliest surviving sermons by Sakyamuni; The Sutra on the Buddha's Bequeathed Teaching, which contains the last teachings he gave before he entered Nirvana; and Guishan’s Admonitions, which is a collection of aphorisms by Guishan Lingyou, the founder of the Guiyang School of Chinese Buddhism. Of the three, the first sutra played a crucial role in spreading Buddhism across Korea thanks to its simplified explanations of the Buddha’s teaching. This particular edition of Buljo samgyeong is a xylographic work published in 1361 at Wonamsa Temple in Jeonju based on the Yuan edition. Currently kept in Unheungsa Temple, this book is particularly highly esteemed as it is the earliest remaining edition printed with woodblocks carved as early as 1361, providing important information for studies of Buddhism and typography in the Goryeo Period.
