Description

The 42-Chapter sutra is one of the Buddhist Scriptures introduced to China from India in the early days of Buddhism in China. It was translated by Gaseommadeung and Chukbeomnan during the Later Han Dynasty. It explains the important lessons of Buddhism in 42 chapters. The block book has a width of 26.3 cm of and a length of 17.2 cm, and includes Buryugyogyeong, translated by Kumārajiva from India, and Wisangyeongchaek, written by Yeongu of the Tang Dynasty. We call these scriptures Commentary on Three Sutras together with Bulseol 42 Janggyeong. According to the epilogue written by Yi Saek, it was published by Ji Bong, Ji Do, and a donor named Kim in the 10th year of the reign of King Gongmin of Goryeo. From the style of the calligraphy, it is inferred that the book was re-inscribed so as to have a similarity with the original book from the Song Dynasty, and from its clear and concise appearance, it is presumed to be the first-printed work of the block.
