Description
Dongin sihwa (Remarks on Poetry by a Man from the East) is an album of poetry and paintings edited by Seo Geo-jeong. The album is prefaced by Kang Hui-maeng (1474) and Kim Su-on (1475). The three-part poetry and painting album, meanwhile, ends with postscripts by Choe Suk-jeong (the fourth lunar month in 1477) and Yang Seong-ji (the second intercalary month in 1477). This is a copy of the first edition of Dongin sihwa, published in the fourth lunar month in 1477. Seo Geo-jeong, a scholar-official of early Joseon, occupied the position of director at the Office of Special Counselors for long years and was reputed for his prose and poetry. This album features a selection of Korean poems from periods ranging from Silla to Joseon, along with critical reviews by Seo Geo-jeong and a text expounding his own theory of poetry. The original cover page was replaced by a new one sometime in the past, and the new one is soiled in places with traces of repair visible in corners. The book is, nevertheless, in reasonable condition, considering its age. This first edition copy of a poetry and painting album published during the lifetime of Seo Geo-jeong is a complete copy with no missing pages. One of the very rare complete copies of a first edition book, this book is also priceless for the light it casts on the history of early Joseon literature, literary criticism and publishing.
