Description

These are three portraits of a military officer named Kim Jung-man. Kim passed the state military examination in 1712 (the 38th year of the reign of King Sukjong of the Joseon Dynasty), suppressed Yi In-jwa's rebel forces in 1728, and was then promoted to the Naval Commander of Chungcheong-do. These three portraits consist of one large piece and two smaller pieces. The large portrait measures 103 cm by 170 cm, while the small ones measure 29 cm by 42.5 cm. In the large picture, Kim is depicted seated on a chair in full official uniform and hat, facing slightly towards the right. His hands are held neatly together within the sleeves. His face is brown in color, but his eyes, nose and lips are effectively expressed through light and shade. Judging from the hyungbae (the embroidered insignia on the breast and back of his official robe), which features a design of two red-crested white cranes, and the gakdae (a belt worn for official duties), which is decorated with gold, it is assumed that the portrait was made when he was a junior second rank minister in the Cabinet. One of the smaller pictures is part of a Gongsin hwacheop (a picture album of a meritorious subject), which would have included his achievements and portrait, while the other was made for a hanging scroll. A tiger is embroidered in the hyungbae of the first, while a red-crested white crane is in the second. Both works are painted in the same style. Judging from such elements as the larger-than-life-size hat, the deep green tone applied to the formal attire, the exaggerated expression of folds, the chair covered with a tiger skin, and the foothold, it is regarded as a typical portrait that faithfully followed the artistic trend of the time. It is considered a valuable asset for research on portraits of that period.
