This certificate of meritorious subject is an official document which shows that King Seongjong, the ninth king of Joseon, rewarded deserving retainers who helped him to secure the throne and granted them a stipend. This document was awarded by the Gongsindogam (a government office of the Joseon Dynasty established to consider and select meritorious subject candidates) to Kim Gil-tong, Minister of the Ministry of Taxation, who was appointed as a 4th-rank official. According to the document, seventy-three persons were granted the title of meritorious subject, i.e. seven persons were appointed to the first rank, twelve to the second rank, eighteen to the third rank and thirty-six to the fourth rank. Although it was originally awarded to many meritorious subjects, few such documents have been preserved. Thus, the certificates of meritorious subject issued to Yi Sung-won, who was appointed to the 3rd rank, and to Kim Gil-tong are the only remaining certificates. The document is a useful material that sheds light on aspects of political power during the reign of King Seongjong.
