Description

Jungsu jeonghwa gyeongsa jeungnyu biyong boncho (Revised Zhenghe Edition of Classified and Practical Basic Materia Medica Based on Historical Classics) is also known by its short name Jeungnyu biyong boncho or Jeonghwa boncho. This thirty-volume encyclopedia of herbal remedies, combining Gyeongsa jeungnyu biyong boncho (Jingshi zhenglei biyong bencao in Chinese, Classified Materia Medica from Historical Classics for Emergency)’ by Tang Shenwei and Boncho yeonui (Bencao yanyi in Chinese, Materia Medica)’ by Kou Zongshi into the same book, is considered one of the greatest remedy books from historical times. Tang Shenwei, a native of Huayang, Chengdu, was a famous physician who asked his patients to share any secret remedies or cures they may know, in exchange for the treatment he provided to them. With the names of medicines and medicinal preparations of which he so came into knowledge, Tang Shenwei wrote his materia medica, whose first draft was completed in the 5th and 6th year of Yuanfeng (1082-1083). In 1098 (the first year of Yuanfu), the manuscript was finalized for this thirty-one volume book, and Gyeongsa jeungnyu biyong boncho, widely regarded as a landmark work in this field, was born. Later, in 1108 (the second year of Daguan), Gyeongsa jeungnyu biyong boncho was re-edited by Ais Sheng and others and was re-published under the title of Daegwan gyeongsa jeungnyu bigeup boncho (or Daegwan boncho for short). In 1116 (the sixth year of Zhenghe), the latter was again revised, on the order of the emperor, and was republished under the title of Jeonghwa sinsu jeungnyu biyong boncho (Jeonghwa boncho for short). In 1159 (the 29th year of Shaoxing), another revised version was published, this time under the title of Soheung gyocheong gyeongsa jeungnyu bigeup boncho. Later, in 1249 (the ninth year of Chunyu), Zhang Cunhui, a Song-dynasty physician and a native of Pingyang published a new edition of this book by adding Boncho yeonui, compiled by Kou Zhongshi, based on essential contents of four hundred seventy-two materia medica books and reducing the number of volumes from thirty-one to thirty. This thirty-volume edition was published in Huidezuan, under the title Jungsu jeonghwa gyeongsa jeungnyu biyong boncho. The characteristics of this book are as follows: Only one of the thirty volumes making up this movable type-printed materia medica (Volume 17; 45 sheets) has survived to the present. Extant copies of the same edition of this book include the twenty-five volumes in the Japanese Cabinet Library (子) 43-8; stamped “Cabinet of Japan”), twenty-five volumes housed in the Toyo Bunko Library in Tokyo, twenty-three volumes in the Archives and Mausolea Department (558-13) of Japan’s Imperial Household Agency, twenty-one volumes housed in Sonkeikaku Bunko in Tokyo, and twenty-five volumes in the collection of the Iwase Bunko Library in Japan. There is also another set of twelve volumes in the collection of the National Palace Museum of Taiwan. Of these, the ones in the collection of the National Palace Museum of Taiwan and Iwase Bunko Library contain the following note indicating that they were printed in the fifth year of Wanli: 萬曆五年二月日/ 內賜內醫院參奉鄭士忠政和本草一件/命除謝/恩/右承旨臣張(臺灣古宮博物院藏)
