Description

Judging from the Buddhist scriptures and votive objects found inside them, these three Buddha statues were made by renowned monk sculptors based in the Jeolla-do region. This work is also of great interest to art historians as a molded sculpture from a period before Joseon’s Buddhist sculptures became overly formalist. No less interesting are the votive objects discovered inside them, providing important clues about the method of fabrication of huryeongtong (votive object containers) and materials used for their fabrication. Based on these reasons, the Sakyamuni Buddha Triad of Dongguksa Temple, including the votive objects lodged inside the statues, was deemed to amply deserve a place in the list of state-protected cultural heritage objects.
