Description

This Commentary on the Vajracchedika prajnaparamita Sutra (The Diamond Sutra) contains explanations and interpretations of the sutra compiled by Huiding of the Song Dynasty. It was published as a xylographic book composed of two volumes at Cheongnyongsa Temple in Chungju in 1378 (the 4th year of the reign of King U of the Goryeo Dynasty). The book contains a postscript written by a Buddhist monk named Mujak in the second lunar month of 1378, as well as a list of names of those who participated in its publication. According to the postscript, the monk presented a sermon about the Diamond Sutra to a group of Buddhist followers as his annual retreat was nearing its end, which moved a lay worshipper named Go Sik-gi to make a donation for the publication of the sutra. The monk had his pupil Manhoe engrave the sutra on woodblocks, which was then printed and bound at Cheongnyongsa Temple in Chungju. It is regarded as an important material for the study of Buddhism and bibliography. As this book was rarely republished, this copy, along with its first publication, is one of the very few copies remaining today. Although its front cover is slightly damaged, no pages have been lost and overall it has been maintained in comparatively good condition, making it a very valuable material.
