This is a series of old documents passed down in the family of Kim Jong-jik, and many of them are important documents related to Kim Jong-jik himself or his descendants. Government-issued documents such as royal adicts, addressed to Kim Jong-jik or certificates of successful completion of civil or military service examinations, earned by his descendants, and the various documents related to appointment or assignment are of particular significance for understanding the way civil service recruitment examinations were administered in early to mid-Joseon, and the organization of government offices during this period. Meanwhile, this ensemble contains large numbers of documents such as records of property inheritance drafted when Kim Jong-jik or his descendants received assets or property from their parents and relatives or deeds transferring land or serfs to them shed light on the practices related to inheritance, transfer of asset ownership in early and mid-Joseon. Also, Kim Jong-jik’s letters to his mother Lady Bak, his wife Lady Jo and his elder brother Jong-yu, and letters that Kim Nyu, his grandson, wrote to a certain Jeong are helpful for expanding the understanding of early Joseon society and everyday life in this society.
