Description
This certificate of meritorious subject was awarded to Changsangun Jang Gwan in 1395 (the fourth year of the reign of King Taejo of the Joseon Dynasty). In August 1392, King Taejo established the government office known as the Gongsindogam for people who had helped him to ascend to the throne. People who had participated directly in the founding of the Joseon Dynasty were appointed to the rank of Gaeguk gongsin (meritorious subjects involved the foundation of the dynasty), while those who had helped him indirectly were nominated as Wonjong gongsin (second-rank meritorious subjects involved in the foundation of the dynasty). This red-colored certificate (67.6 cm long by 34 cm wide) was a unique certificate awarded to the Wonjong gongsin. The certificate records the subject’s meritorious deeds and official titles, and is stamped in nine places with the official seal of the Ministry of Personnel, including at the head of the certificate. The certificate is a valuable artifact for understanding the nation’s meritorious subjects in the early days after the foundation of the Joseon Dynasty, as well as studies of the certificates awarded to meritorious subjects, government organizations, and the innovative Idu script of the early Joseon Dynasty.
