Description

These ancient documents of the Namyang Jeon clan include royal orders, royal edicts, family registers, and wills among others that have been handed down through six generations of the family. The documents were produced between 1416 (the 16th year of the reign of King Taejong of the Joseon Dynasty) and 1565 (the 20th year of the reign of King Myeongjong). King Taejong awarded one royal order and one edict to Jeon Heung; two royal edicts to Jeon Ga-saeng; one royal edict to Jeon Ji; and one edict to Jeon U-pyeong. Jeon Hwa handed over his farmland and servants to Jeon Gyeong-eop, his eldest son, who was obliged to performed ancestral worship rites. The three family registers owned by Jeon Yu-seong were also written in 1702 (the 3rd year of the reign of King Sukjong). These eight documents consist of twenty-seven sheets in total. The royal orders and edicts are considered valuable materials for the study of forms of documentation in the early Joseon Dynasty, while the wills concerning farmland and servants are important artifacts that shed light on the family systems, social structures and economic conditions of that time.
