Description

These printing woodblocks, which are kept at Haeinsa Temple in Hapcheon-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, were engraved with Buddhist scriptures taken from the writings of famous Buddhist priests and poetry of the Goryeo dynasty. They consist of 54 kinds of 2,835 woodblocks, of which 28 kinds of 2,725 woodblocks have been designated as National Treasure No. 206, and 26 kinds of 110 woodblocks designated as Treasure No. 734. These woodblocks were engraved at a temple or a local government office rather than at the Daejangdogam government office at which the Printing Woodblocks of the Tripitaka Koreana in Haeinsa Temple, Hapcheon (National Treasure No. 32) were engraved. These woodblocks are kept in the Saganpanjeon Halls, situated to east and west between the Janggyeongpanjeon Depositories of Haeinsa Temple. These woodblocks include Mahayana Sutras, such as Geumganggyeong (Diamond Sutra) and Hwaeomgyeong (Avatamska Sutra), and the poetry and writings of high priests and common persons of the Silla and Goryeo Dynasties and China. Most of the Buddhist sutras of this temple contain such information as the year of engraving and purpose; therefore, they are important materials for research on the publication and distribution of Buddhist scriptures and the trend of Buddhism during the Goryeo Dynasty. However, much of the poetry and writing of high priests and common people lack information on their publication, and some parts of them are damaged, although this does not detract from their status as rare historical materials and valuable artifacts for the study of Buddhism and culture of the Goryeo Dynasty. The Printing Woodblocks of Miscellaneous Buddhist Scriptures in Haeinsa Temple are considered a representative and highly symbolic work attesting to the high culture of the Goryeo Dynasty.
