Description

The Wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha of Bongamsa Temple is small (51.5㎝ in height) and has been preserved in good condition. According to a letter of invocation excavated from the statue, this Amitabha Buddha statue was produced by two monks, named Naun and Beopjeong, in 1586 (the 19th year of the reign of King Seonjo of the Joseon Dynasty). As only a few Buddha statues made in the late 16th century have survived to the present day, this statue is an important work that provides valuable information on the production of Buddhist sculptures before the Japanese invasion in 1592. The Buddha’s curly hair is expressed with big, sharp shapes, and is topped with a large semicircular ornament and a round ornament. The round face with plump cheeks gives a soft and gentle impression, while the body looks rather small because of the narrow shoulders. The robe covering both shoulders is expressed with simple creases as well. Overall, this statue displays similar characteristics to other statues made in the 16th century, such as the Wooden Seated Bodhisattva of Seosansa Temple in Jeju (made in 1534).
